Downtown Annapolis has been closing streets to allow restaurants to seat folks outside on certain nights and weekends, and The Naptown Brass Band will be performing on a stage set up in front of Buddy's Crabs & Ribs right on Main St. this Saturday, July 25 from 6-7pm. Come support the local restaurants, have a meal and enjoy the show.

The show will be right in the middle of the downtown recovery zone, where the city is doing all it can for the local restaurant owners. This is not a town where chain businesses overrun the locals. Shutting down the streets to allow them to expand their dining rooms outside is an effort to save these businesses, and I salute the city for it and will do my part to help.

I've been playing almost fifty years, and this group is the most fun I've had with any band ever. I suppose I made the natural progression from my father's New Orleans styled dixieland band to a New Orleans styled brass band to carry on a sense of their tradition. Funny thing, is that when my father, a jazz pianist, could no longer do dixieland gigs and I told him I was in a N.O. brass band, the first thing he asked was, "Do you have a piano player?" That's just how he was though, always wanting to play whether he knew the genre or not.

Our group is mentored by Kirk Joseph of Dirty Dozen Brass Band fame. He visits every year for our annual St. Paddy's Day parade and not only marches with us, but give his time most graciously with an annual brass band masterclass. That we can spread out and play without a stage and without amplification gives us a leg up on the sort of performances allowed these days as we can set up on a street corner, a backyard, or given my town's nature... a boat.

That's a good drive but within range for me. Just might do it. Any restaurants you'd recommend, or tell me to avoid?
Hate to say it, but Buddy's Crabs & Ribs... I wouldn't get crabs there or ribs. The Sunday brunch however was epic, but that was when buffets were allowed... and I can't see that sort of thing coming back anytime soon. But you don't want to order steamed crabs at any downtown restaurant. Crabcakes yes, but not steamed crabs. O'Briens across the street from Buddy's has decent seafood/raw bar and should have tables out where you can hear us if you're there early enough. Around the corner of the Market House is McGarvey's, and although it's got new management, they still keep things as they were; with good burgers and a great raw bar. Down Main St. for sushi, I like Nano's as opposed to the more popular Joss. Decent French food can be had at Cafe Normandie; it'll look nice with taste to match and ain't too overpriced. For Mexican you can go around Church Circle to West St. and find Torro Bravo. A decent Italian place near that is Luna Blu. For bar food on West. St. it's Stan & Joes. Further up West St. is a good Tai place called Lemmongrass. Other restaurants that can be found over the Eastport Bridge are Blackwall Hitch, with plenty of outdoor seating and happy hour food specials, and The Boatyard Grille. More upscale/pricey Eastport restaurants include O'Leary's for seafood and Lewnes' for steaks.

I agree, that is a pretty interesting thing to do....and it is also quite do-able for many towns and cities...simply close off some streets, suspend the sidewalk/street use codes/regs - in order to allow these establishments an opportunity to survive.

All distancing and other regulations still adhered to and in effect I am sure.

This is...well, it isn't brilliant - it is common sense...but in the current national context of first and second phase re-openings, this IS brilliant.

Turned out to be a really nice night. We had a good amount of people coming through, but nothing out of hand. One really cool thing about it, was that a local pro... a guy who played sax with Elvis back in the early Miami days... was able to park his Cadillac in a great spot to see the show. His band played my sister's wedding way back when, and I hadn't seen him since he joined my combo for the night at a bay foundation function some years ago. Nice to see that he got to get out with his wife, could stay safely in his car and he was digging our show. Made some decent scratch as well.
