My sax playing friend was cleaning out his mouthpiece drawer which contained many of his grandfathers old mouthpieces. We came across this ligature and neither of us could identify what it is or why it was so different. I figure I would ask the SOTW community and see if anyone could help us identify it. ( see picture ) . Its only about an inch in circumference so it doesn't look like it would fit any standard sax mouthpiece. Looks to small for clarinet as well. Any ideas?

It could be.... just our luck to think we have some very rare ligature and it turns out to be some sort of plumbing fixture.

Wait..... could it be an old Flute Lyre? The round part is about the size of a flute and that small shaft sticking out is hollow so something could be stuck into it?

To me...that shaft looks like some kind of vent or whistle. It's not round (at least it doesn't look like it from the picture), so it doesn't look like it was meant to hold something.

Its 3/4 of an inch across ( almost 2 centimeters for the the metric community). It does have scratches on the protruding metal that look like someone had gripped it with pliers. I think hose clamp OR battery post connector as the most likely answers. I guess someone in my friends family figured it looked like a ligature so they tossed it in grandpa's box of vintage mouthpieces and ligatures. I'm glad the other ligatures are stamped with Dukoff and "Arnold Brilhart" on them to make my identification easier.

Thank you everyone for all the help and if you need one of these Hose Clamp/ Battery Clamps I can auction this off on e-bay but it won't be under musical instruments.

It is a Fipple. This was used for the old flutes so a novice could play them. The device clamps around the blowhole on a flute head and the player blows through the end and the area where the clamp is directs the air across the hole. Makes the flute more like a whistle. A common recorder uses a fipple style mouthpiece.

Wait... so I should go back out to my garage and take if off my wife's trucks coolant hose?

Wow, i had already accepted that it was a hardware clamp of somekind. Nice find. I knew it was worth asking on here. Collective knowledge is an amazing thing. The internet and the linking of users is an amazingly powerful tool.
