I finally finished my socially distanced big band project!

I'm on guitar, and also handled the audio & video production. (I may even have dubbed a couple of sax lines...)

Thanks for sharing that, Merlin. It makes me miss my band mates all the more.

I would love to hear the back story of how you made the video.

Thanks for sharing that, Merlin. It makes me miss my band mates all the more.

I would love to hear the back story of how you made the video.
The audio was recorded first. I was hoping to get the band members to contribute their own, but only one of them was set up to do so. I prepared a guide track with bass line, drums, and click track in Reaper.

I ended up recording all other audio parts in isolation, with proper distancing at the band's rehearsal room. Video was shot simultaneously with the audio for rhythm section and soloists parts.

Once the audio mix was completed, the video with a click intro intact was sent out to the band members who then played the track through speakers, performed with it, and captured it on their phones. The phone videos were uploaded, I used the click tracks to sync them to the audio track, and then muted the audio from the video tracks.

After that, it was a matter of compositing different sections into different overlay tracks, so I could assemble the final video. Video assembly and editing was done with Corel VideoStudio 2020.

Great stuff, nice band! I really enjoy Rob McConnell's writing, such a distinctive sound, a Canadian legend really.
