After a lot of experimentation I've found a set up that works tremendously well with my 1920's King Saxello. I have dug Bennie Maupin's sound on saxello for a long time particularly on the first Headhunters album with Blackbird McKnight. Out of the three main exponents of the instrument , the other two being Roland Kirk and Elton Dean
I always liked Bennie the most.
The Aaron Drake Son of Slant 7 piece with Rico Plasticovers or Royals 21/2 gives a good workable scale, good volume, great tone and really brings out the distinctive King saxello character

Bennie is possibly the most underrated/underappreciated saxist alive today.

Here is the guy who played on arguably the most seminal Jazz album of all time....yet he constanly gets overlooked or completely ignored....and he is sounding hella good these days, I might add !!!

I got a chance to see him live w/ Buster Williams, Patrice Rushen, and Cindy Blackman last year....that was absurdly fantastic.

Can you post a clip of yourself playing the setup ? I have a vidfile of one on my website, using a contemporary Link 6* Rubber.....and I believe Gonzalez 2-1/4 reeds.

They are interesting horns, really different sonically than your standard Soprano.....

I will when I record on it. I'm using it at the moment in a live soundtracking to a film so that will be recorded I think. I think the King saxello has a unique sound too certainly Bennie sounded different on his regular Mark V1 to the saxello on the Headhunters albums. I love his playing on everything...bass clarinet, alto flute and the tenor of course.
