A music major I am not. But to my ear these two songs sound similar. The first is in D the second in Bb, (tenor sax).
Is it the melody, or the chord progression?
I have both in real books. If i copy the chords of each without the notes and count the intervals in between will that help unlock something?

How do you go about comparing/contrasting songs? Thanks. Mayho

The chord progressions to the two tunes are pretty different, but there are general similarities in the melodies. They both start with a long ascending line, then work their way back down using a melodic sequence (a small melodic shape that gets repeated at a different pitch level).

You may be interested in the Oscar Peterson Trio's version of "my One and Only Love" on "We get requests" (Verve) where they easily slip from the named song into "Someone to watch over me"
