I have stage 3 colon cancer and recently lost my mother to dementia . The cancer is very curable . But it makes you think of your mortality . A bass was on my bucket list. I was going to save for a conn or Buescher . When I dropped my clarinets off at hammer woodwinds I told mike hammer to keep a eye out for a bass. He told me he had selmer super action 80s in the shop and the selmer style Chinese basses. He said the Chinese basses while not a selmer impressed him. That night I googled bass sax for sale and found a levante on amazon for $2915. I bought it. It played right outa the box. Pads pop. Keywork very solid. Don’t like the mid D but I heard selmers mid D isn’t much better. Very responsive sax. High register speaks well. Solid case. I used a selmer S90 baritone mouthpiece on it with good results . I ordered a Jody jazz 6 bass sax mouthpiece for it. The Jody jazz can be used on baris too and uses bari reeds. It’s on back order at wwbw.com

I don’t post on here much. After Gordon NZ somewhat rude comments on my bass clarinet playing I had my fill of this forum . Pre covid I played bass clarinet /clarinet in a orchestra . Baritone sax and bass clarinet in concert band, and fill in on alto tenor bari sax swing fever . Just posted cause I really like my new bass. I was surprised at how well it was set up and how well it plays .

Try a Selmer bass sax mouthpiece as well. I found the sound to be richer and more controllable than the Jody Jazz, although the Jody is a very good piece.

The way a bass sits in the mix, you don't need to be as loud as you think you do, to be heard.

. I have find memories of taking the high school conn bass in its bag case home. Even played it in church. It's been 35 years since I played one. I like the selmer bass mthpc idea. I use a greifenhagen double chamber on my Rampone low Bb bari. Would love to see how the Jody jazz bass piece( can also be used on baritones for a darker sound) will do with it.

I was watching that listing for a couple of weeks on amazon and glad it went to someone who will actually use it and enjoy it.
I was saving for a vintage bass but mike Hammer of hammer woodwinds really likes the Chinese basses. I'm glad I pulled the trigger. I'm amazed at the playability and build quality .

Well, what you've got there is esssentially a copy of the Selmer Super Action 80 bass (the shorter "French wrap" style which is easier to manage physically than the taller "American wrap" like Conn or Buescher).

From what I've read there are basicallly two Chinese basses, one from an outfit called "Jin Bao" (the short wrap bass) and the other from an outfit called "Jinyin" (the "long wrap" bass). They will engrave any name you want on them if you order the right quantity. From internet scuttlebutt the Jin Bao basses (what you've got there) are considerably better built than the Jinyin ones. They are all keyed to high F. It looks from other internet info that you have a front F key as well.

My wife and youngest daughter ( who is a fabulous saxophonist ) think the levante bass sounds like my selmer super action 80 series I baritone albeit lower. Definitely not a vintage long wrap American bass sound. But it’s still a gas to play it.

I want mike hammer to adjust the articulated cluster and open up the bell keys. Plus I think the body octave vent adjusted. Plus the standard regulation and look for leaks.

I received a Jody jazz DV 6 bass mouthpiece from wwbw.com . Great intonation . Plenty of rich overtones. Reed friendly . Easier low note response. My selmer s90 210 worked well for midrange and high notes but the low notes were tough. Uses baritone reeds. Can use on a bari sax. I used it on my Rampone R1Jazz low Bb baritone and it’s the best that baritone has ever sounded.

Congrats. I'm the owner of the Levante with intonation issues in the previous thread. I'm till working through that. I did get a Caravan mouthpiece with the bass sax facing. For a little under $200, it definitely makes the horn richer in the low end (and I'm not comparing to the junk stock mouthpiece). Enjoy.

. Got it back. Couple of pads got shellac. G# Mech was messing with low C# low B and Bb. Adjusted and low end is great. As for intonation, tuning mid c to 0 on te tuner I got good intonation . Mid D 35 cents sharp and mid E 25 cents sharp. High D and E fingering without octave key do mid D and E in tune. Palm keys sharp but not excessively so. Using a Jody jazz DV bass 6 mouthpiece with a Rico royal 3 1/2 reed.

Congrats, that is a nice-looking instrument, especially for the price! I am still saving up for something like that, love my old Conn but the ergos are pretty atrocious.

That whole middle D to E range is troublesome on most bass saxes. I wish someone would come up with a double octave vent similar to the Yamaha YBS-62 setup. Many bassax players use the palm D without octave key for middle D.
