So. This new CD, House of Relics, the product of nearly 2 years of rehearsing, performing, and recording with this group, features bari-legend Bruce Johnstone on 3 tracks. Bruce was a musical hero of mine way back when I was a punk kid (now, of course, I'm well into punk adulthood) -- I played those Maynard Ferguson records he was on into dust!

If you're wondering what Bruce is sounding like these days, well, here you go! (HINT: he kills -- wait till you hear his ballad feature...)

Regarding the music, here's what I say in the liner notes:

"This music is a response to the jazz genre hard bop. It's my attempt to bring some of the features of that music -- direct melodies, rhythmic & melodic hooks, and clear song forms, all informed by the blues -- into my writing. I'm not trying to compose hard bop tunes. Instead, I'm trying to explore 'hard bop values' in my compositions, and seeing what happens..."

See? I'm not writing hard bop tunes -- instead, I'm exploring "hard bop values." Right?!? You're with me, right?

Well, actually, don't bother parsing my gibberish: if you're even slightly mildly vaguely curious, but commitment-phobic, you can actually stream the Entire Ding-Dang Thing FOR FREE on my Bandcamp site -- and then, thanks to the embedded subliminal messages in the audio, you'll feel compelled to buy 10 copies and a bag of popcorn! Good for you! Great idea!

Here it is:

If you feel so inclined, check it out, and I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you, Pete! I'm very pleased with how it's turned out, and we worked hard to make it SOUND great, so I really appreciate you digging that...

Kind of makes me think of how I would like to play if I was a proper jazz musician!
Hmmm, I think you sound quite fine, then, as an improper jazz musician...

Love it! And I love the concept of "...trying to explore 'hard bop values'..." in your composing. I may have to borrow that concept.
Just bought the digital version--really looking forward to listening to all of it. Great work!

Now I'm listening--wow--you're writing is really inspiring--love the textures in the rhythm section and the melodies are intuitive and swinging. Everyone sounds relaxed and just in the moment of it all. Super nice stuff....

Wow! Thank you, Jayn! (And exploring "hard bop values" is fun -- go for it!)

Thanks, zorroperro!

And yeah, shortwhite: his killing playing on "Live At Jimmy's" was what put Bruce on my radar screen waaaay back when. He's a wonderful guy to work with, and has great stories about the "Live At Jimmy's" date and about sharing the bandstand with folks like Dexter and Ben Wester...
