Last year I picked up a lovely Grassi alto in non-working condition for just over £100. A little bit of TLC and judicious bending along with frequent reference to the Haynes Saxophone Manual and it's a beauty. Lovely bright tone and plenty fast enough action for my slightly ham-fisted playing. Serial number is 21*** so apparently pre-1974 but no more info than that unless someone here can help more.

Highly underrated, completely off-radar, are Grassis. Even though they produced very good horns for most of their years.

I have one still in excellent condition - as light a free blowing as my Conn Director. I really like it.

I had a tenor version, many years back. Used to gig with a pop band for a good while with it. In the ended sold it on when I had the offer of a different horn, that I found no better in fact.

Nice. Mine had taken a fair bit of abuse, it needed quite a bit of light wire wool to get the corrosion off a few keys and there was a bent key preventing any note below A playing but so far, no cash has been spent getting it back to playing condition. It feels nicely rounded under the fingers (if that makes any sense) as opposed to angular like a few altos I’ve played.

I have one still in excellent condition - as light a free blowing as my Conn Director. I really like it.
