Thought I'd share a photo of my practice room in the hotel I'm at. My attempt at keeping the volume down.
In my efforts to keep the volume low I've been using an older 'not open' mouthpiece and putting through just enough air to only'just vibrate the reed. The result is a very breathy sound that to me sounds a lot like what I thought was 'subtone'. Is it? To me this 'technique'used to play quietly was not the one used to get the subtone sound (which I actually love).
Having some trouble uploading the photo from my phone but will keep trying.

Oh yeah, the other thing was what techniques do others use to keep volume at a minimum?

Stuff something in the bell or direct the sound into a cupboard are the old standbys.

Try a bit of very open weave gauze stuffed into the neck. Doesn't take much and shouldn't restrict the airflow. Will need changing frequently as it gets moist/wet.
