Just got my new horn via ups about a week ago. It's a silver with gold wash bell True Tone alto. Serial # 2454xx. Which puts it at around 1929, i think. The plating is still 98% complete, matt body, polished keys and engraved area ,no dents or dings.the cosmetics are astounding. I don't have the ability to post pictures, but the images are still up on the "This Old Horn.com" web site under "vintage horns". The pictures there show up with a golden tone, you have to imagine it as silver.
The horn was listed as a 2yr old overhaul, but the owner Rob Dorsey refused to ship it without installing new pads (over and beyond the deal we had cut ).
So I put it together, slapped a mouthpiece on it ,and it played like cr*p. True to my nature, I freaked out. Got hold of Rob, and he explained that some horns don't like road trips. With his coaching and a few calls saying "what the next step", I managed to adjust it.(reverse this spring, tweek that spring, bend this pad cup, tweek this one etc. ).I no longer fear the mechanics of saxophones.
to make a long story even longer , i managed (with phone coaching) to "Tech" the little beast to my will.It plays sweetly from bottom to top. I love the tone and the ergos are perfect for my little monkey hands.
all in all,I got more than i expected from Rob (he is throwing in a new .085 mouthpiece to boot). Should I win the lottery i"ll buy the gold TT tenor he has.

That speaks well of both of you that you could get the needed repairs done by phone. He's a good teacher, you're a good learner.

Man, if following up the directions of a trombonist you managed to make sound a saxophone wich had the pads replaced by a trombonist, I'd say you're a f***ing genius. Kudos on the achievement!

paulwl.....thanks for the complement...i used to restore vintage bmw motorcycles as a hobby..after all a sax is just metal and dead animals put together in a magical way.

jicaino...thanks for the kudos....a musician is a musician even if he plays washboard...i always accept help from whoever...if you were drowning at sea would you refuse a trombone extended from a boat to save you ?...i was at sea with this thing.

dave dolson...thank you. i promise to enjoy

The trombone stuff is something I'd have to ponder on (wether I prefer to die in dignity or being saved by a trombone) Anyways it was my attempt to be funny about trombones and trombonist while congratulating you about being able to make your horn play. I'm 100% serious about you having mechanical "genius" or talent or inclination or whatever you'd like to call that.

first a disclaimer........i'm just starting my journey with saxophones (only about a year). i'm not a tech and i don't really know d**k about saxes....i did manage to have it hit all it's notes, however i know i can't get it any where near it's potential.

jicaino...thank you again...whats the difference between an onion and a trombone ????......................................no one cries when you cut up a trombone.....ba...dum

grumps....i've followed a lot of your posts while i lurked and learned about sax and buescher...you are my buescher idol...i spent a week looking for a good tech near me on sotw and i found one (70 miles)...we talked on the phone i'll set something up with him soon....thank you for your advice...
