I own a very nice VI, Mauriat 66RGL and had a Yamaha years ago. I played the VI in concert band and in our "party band" for years but I wanted a tenor that played louder for the type of music our band was (and still is) playing for parties.
A local music store had taken in a VII on trade. I tried it out in the store and the sound (volume) was very full and capable of playing much louder than my VI.
The "big sound" is just a general term for volume. Some players do not need or want the volume but I like it. The VII (to me) is an excellent Rock & Roll tenor with the right m/p. I also had a VII alto which was an excellent model but a Mauriat took its place.
Not to get sidetracked but the only thing about the VII tenor that I did not care for was the tilt-design of the original neck so I changed the neck to a Selmer Goldbrass Series III neck in 2008
