Hi everybody,

Just thought I'd share some footage of my first live stream gig ever.

A few months ago, my friend Holly Moore was selected as the recipient of this year's Melbourne International Jazz Festival 'Take Note' grant and professional development program. Take Note is designed to address the underrepresentation of women in jazz. As part of the program, Holly was commissioned to write a concert of music for the Festival and will be conducing workshops with high school kids in the next few months. A few months ago, I was lucky enough to be asked by Holly to play on her project. Unfortunately, the festival ended up being cancelled because of the virus, but they were able to organise live streams for some key performances (including us!).

Holly wrote what I think is a pretty terrific and cohesive set of music for a sextet. All of us on stage are friends and met at university or music camps back in school. At the time of the performance, none of us had really played with other people in months because of various lockdown restrictions. We definitely feel like the lucky ones because so many musicians are really down on work at this time.

The performance itself was really unlike anything I've experienced before - no audience, strict social distancing protocols, socially distanced rehearsals, etc. I have to say that the Festival did an amazing job of managing the virus side of things. They provided hand sanitiser and a very comprehensive briefing on entry to the venue, all the spaces were big enough for us to easily socially distance and any contact surfaces were sanitised between performances. We even had our temperatures checked before we were allowed inside. All the sound technicians were masked up and operating in a socially distanced manner. The acts were scheduled such that there would be no contact at all between successive bands. We were followed by local legend Paul Grabowsky playing a solo piano concert. The most contact I had with Paul was waving at him in his car as I drove away!

Anyway, I'm the tenor player on the video, which will be up for a while longer. Just thought I'd share what was a fun, but quite unusual experience for me. :)

Here is the performance link.

Thanks Lionel, it's nice to know people are listening all the way across the world! I hope that the latest set of restrictions over here ease a bit so that things like this will once again be possible.

I realise that I hadn't embedded the video in the original post, so here it is.

Not just great players, but great people and good friends too! I met most of them while at university and a couple before while still in school. It's amazing how you can go from playing together pretty much weekly or even more often at uni to it being just every few years as people go off and do their own thing. And of course, the pandemic has made all of this worse. Who knows when the gigs will start up again!

And yeah, what an opportunity too! I didn't really have a clear idea of what it was all going to look like until I got home and checked out the youtube link. The sound engineer was really fantastic. Everything was set up and waiting for us before we stepped on stage and the soundcheck took just a couple of minutes to get the levels ok. Everything worked as it was meant to - not a single technical glitch or issue anywhere. I'm also quite impressed with how good the mix is for a youtube clip. I imagine there's some pretty serious software making all of this work.

This was also my first gig on a Sennheiser 421. I'll confess that what I really wanted to try was the mic they used on Holly because it looks so impressive, but I know for sure that if I'm offered a 421 as an option for a gig, I'll be pleased with the result. Definitely sounds better than your ordinary sm58s and 57s.

Another random bit of info is that backstage they had a special table for us to leave our face masks (compulsory in Victoria at the time and still compulsory) while on stage. The squares on the table were marked with masking tape and labelled with our names. They really did think of everything!
