Hi everybody,
Just thought I'd share some footage of my first live stream gig ever.
A few months ago, my friend Holly Moore was selected as the recipient of this year's Melbourne International Jazz Festival 'Take Note' grant and professional development program. Take Note is designed to address the underrepresentation of women in jazz. As part of the program, Holly was commissioned to write a concert of music for the Festival and will be conducing workshops with high school kids in the next few months. A few months ago, I was lucky enough to be asked by Holly to play on her project. Unfortunately, the festival ended up being cancelled because of the virus, but they were able to organise live streams for some key performances (including us!).
Holly wrote what I think is a pretty terrific and cohesive set of music for a sextet. All of us on stage are friends and met at university or music camps back in school. At the time of the performance, none of us had really played with other people in months because of various lockdown restrictions. We definitely feel like the lucky ones because so many musicians are really down on work at this time.
The performance itself was really unlike anything I've experienced before - no audience, strict social distancing protocols, socially distanced rehearsals, etc. I have to say that the Festival did an amazing job of managing the virus side of things. They provided hand sanitiser and a very comprehensive briefing on entry to the venue, all the spaces were big enough for us to easily socially distance and any contact surfaces were sanitised between performances. We even had our temperatures checked before we were allowed inside. All the sound technicians were masked up and operating in a socially distanced manner. The acts were scheduled such that there would be no contact at all between successive bands. We were followed by local legend Paul Grabowsky playing a solo piano concert. The most contact I had with Paul was waving at him in his car as I drove away!
Anyway, I'm the tenor player on the video, which will be up for a while longer. Just thought I'd share what was a fun, but quite unusual experience for me.
Here is the performance link.
