My very talented high school senior plans to enroll in college next fall and major in music performance. She currently plays a Selmer Omega Flute and a Bruce Bailey c-foot piccolo. Would it would be a good idea to upgrade her flute for college? She's auditioning on flute and piccolo for a music scholarship. She'd really like a Bruce Bailey Flute to go with her piccolo.

If she's going to major in Performance, by all means upgrade the flute. Have her hold on to the Omege in case she wants to do the marching band thing. That is IF they allow flutes.

I sort of thought an upgrade would be a good idea, but I honestly don't know what to get her. She loves the flute she has, but her prize possession is the piccolo. Guess that's why she wants the Bailey flute so bad. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Bailey flutes are great(dont own one, but Ive played them) Try getting Bruce's attention since he posts here regularly, hes a great, straightforward guy.

I agree with Big Bandmommy though, upgrading for college will make things easier on your daughter. There is likely to be less fighting of the instrumet as she gets into more advanced and terchnical pieces.

And also yes, do hold onto the Selmer flute. Its always good to have an instrument if she wants to play it in the pep band or marching band etc.

Where is she auditioning?

Many colleges have a list of recommended instruments (brand & model). A sampling of these lists is on Larry Krantz' flute web site. They have the brands we all expect to see: Powell, Haynes, Muramatsu, Miyazawa, Altus, etc. The least expensive flutes that commonly appear on these lists are Yamahas and the upper line Jupiters. I certainly do NOT intend to steer you away from Bruce, but just recommend you also check that out too.

Fortunately for us, she's received 2 academic scholarships already that'll cover a little over 1/2 of the costs and is accepted to Converse. But tuition and board is about $30k a year there and we're hoping that she'll get a music scholarship too to cover the rest.

I agree that this would be a good place to get ideas if you don't know what is out there, but as we all know, you have to get what's right for you (or your daughter).

You can call me at 305-667-4925. My flutes don't intend to be a Powell or Brannen BUT they are not in that price range. All this depends on a budget. I agree that she should try various brands and see what "fits" her playing and financial needs.
