I have, at last, received my Chu from the States, i must say, the seller took great care with packing, he even found a better more protective case to fly it in,
i got it out of the case and it play straight away, low b to high F, sounds fantastic, keywork is really tight.

but god, is it ugly :)
really gunged up and it still has several original resopads!
i will try and post some pictures later on but i am going to repad it and eventually, hopefully, get it nicely plated in sating silver plate (burnished over the engraving) and have gold plate highlights on the key guards, joint braces (bow/bell/body) and perhaps get the engraving recut.

i payed £80 for it INCLUDING postage from the states! and it plays worth 6 times that!

tell me what you think of the pics when i post them.

My god! That is the Ugliest Horn I have evr seen in my life! I mean that too! I guess my tenor wins too in the tenor category. Call Doc Frazier, or Visit JandJwoodwinds.com. I am going to have them replate my tenor. There is hope my dear friend, but if it plays, who cares what the hell it looks like? If the keys were bare brass too, I would like it more. Call Artistic Engraving, or visit there website to get it reengraved. What country do you live in by the way? Get it replated.

well, thanks for the encouraging words Chu. *sarcasm*

I am in the UK, it plays amazingly and i absolutely love it, currently it is virtually on equal par to my SBA as far as feel, ergos, sound and intonation are concerned,
i know the engraving looks faint in the picture but it's quite crisp in person.

Other than colours, I love the look of it. No dings or dents, or bent keys, or abnormalities. I have a Silver plate conn Alto, that isn't even that straight, and doesn't play at all at the moment. That horn has a lot of potential to look beautiful. I am sorry if I have offended you, but I am one who tells the truth. I don't like to talk about people behind their backs. Oh by the way. I used to live in the UK near West Reicelip. It is the Last stop on the Tube when you get off near Ickenham. I love it there. It is my home, and I very much miss it.

I personally like the patina with the silver... I agree with a previous comment, strip it, bring it to a nice even patina and shoot some lacquer on it. Heck, that's what Selmer does with the Reference 54's... just on all of the horn, not just the body. Whatever you do, DO NOT buff the heck out of it...

Where's your photos gone, Serj? I can't see them. These early Conns are brilliant aren't they? I've honestly never played a bad one even among the pre Chu berry horns. I'm not sure about all this replating/relaqering biz though. Have you had a quote on how much that sort of stuff costs in the uk?

Wow that horn has seen a lot of use. I've never seen a Conn of this vintage with nickle plated keys over a bare brass body. The lacquer would have been applied later. At least that's what it looks like from the pics. What's the deal with the silver neck? Is it original?

I have to say though the horn itself looks to be in great shape. I'm very impressed by how straight the right hand pinky cluster is. My New Wonder was/is in great cosmetic shape, but even its keys took a hit sometime in its life and the cluster is slightly misaligned.

If you're going to get the engravings re-cut after the replate I'd suggest going all out and getting them inlaid with gold (like certain Super 20 Silversonic horns). You would have one of the most unique horns that wasn't an Artist model too. Wow £80 was a steal. Congrats again.

the silver neck, i am assured is original,
i am now probably not gonna have it plated, i would love to at some point in it's life, but for now i will just install the roos with crinkled star resos, WHEN THEY ARRIVE!! and play it, but perhaps when it next comes round for an overhaul, so perhaps 10/20 years or so i will probably have the money to get it plated aswell.
