Mutilating a Jumbo JAVA

2375 Views 18 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  hgiles
I have an as-new Jumbo JAVA T55 that I'd like to practice my mangler ... er..... refacing skills on. Given they aren't valued much in the marketplace, as best I can tell, no one is likely to miss this one.

I want to file out that silly baffle almost entirely, try to emulate an early Tone Edge, but am wondering which tools work best for this. I have a mandrel on which I can mount the piece and keep it still, but the only tools I have for potential chamber work are jeweler's files. What other tools are used for this? I am thinking along woodworking lines for lack of a better idea.....

I've had really good luck with a dremel...there's several different grinding stones that work pretty well for baffle work...its really easy to change a wedge into a bullet.

DO NOT USE THE DREMEL ON THE TIP OR RAILS...I've got several hundred dollars ruined downstairs by trying to thin out rails....I suck

I disagree. They are great mouthpieces and happen to be inexpensive. .
I prefer my t45 tenor to my lamberson 7DD, my Barone New York 7 star, and My Ponzol 120

Okay I came to my senses (well sort of...) and put it on ebay. I'll check out that mpc-work forum on yahoo sooner or later, thanks.
The first step in the proper mutilation of a Jumbo is to remove the dopey elephant.
What's the eBay item number? I may want to mutilate it... or at least show it some tough love.

And I agree regarding the Jumbo (or the French elephant later Disney-fied as Dumbo). For going through the trouble of putting an elephant on the piece, they could have at least made it pink.

Debussey's lullaby being one of my favorites to play on piano...

I'm sure I'd just torture it with pure malice..... Also momentarily thought about sawing it through lengthwise ... But it's essentially new and so far unblemished. It was the material that sparked my brief spasm of wannabe-refacer.
If the elephant was pink, I'd let it stay. Wind.miller, you went and inspired me. I took out the back end of the baffle and smoothed the whole mess into a curve. The result was good- a fatter lower end and a nice bite.
That's about what I would have tried to do (and possibly shorten the shank end). I've relented, though, and will try something on a more homely piece of quality HR. Right now just curious about the sorts of hand tools that expedite baffle and chamber work....
I put a bullet chamber on an alto Jumbo before - smoothed out the low end a little, but didn't radically change the performance of the piece.

I'm actually preferring to open up lesser Javas to create a higher longer rollover. gives you that ZING! POW! Batman onomatopea response you get from a Jumbo, but with a fuller core through the range.

Still working up a Darth Maul edition in the lab for blackfrancis with a red Vandoren...:D

I agree I colored mine in with pemanant marker
That's sweet, Ed! Looks like it came out of a cranberry bog. The leprous appearance of the reed tip is a nice touch- reminds me of the Emperor...
