I'm taking my younger daughter to see a college there in a few days and wondered if there's anything going on music-wise to check out. I've never been to N. Carolina, except through the airport!

As a longtime Triangle resident, I strongly recommend you check out the Sharp Nine Gallery in Durham, which is not far from Raleigh (really the whole Raleigh/Cary/Durham/Chapel Hill area is like one very connected area). Tenor saxophonist Dave Finucane has run the Durham Jazz Workshop at the #9 for over a decade and has concerts several nights a week. In the last couple of months I've seen great local groups perform, as well as 2 concerts and a masterclass with George Garzone, and a great show with the Larry Goldings/Peter Bernstein/Bill Stewart trio.

If you're here next week, the wonderful tenor sax/piano duo of Stephen Riley and Ernest Turner are playing Friday 17 March.

Check out the concert section on their website here:

I grew up in Chapel Hill and don't have much to say about Raleigh one way or another, but as noted above Durham has become a pretty hip cultural scene. I would also try to visit Chapel Hill and Hillsboro, which are beautiful and interesting towns. You'll want to eat some barbecue and some biscuits. Also note that a disproportionate number of jazz and other musical geniuses have come from NC: Coltrane, Monk, Nina Simone, Tina Brooks, Maceo Parker, Roberta Flack... Me and a friend are planning to visit all of their hometowns as a sort of pilgrimage. Anyway, I'm always glad to be back in my home state (politics aside) and hope you will enjoy your visit. I consider it one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

Will you only be in Raleigh or are the other triangle cities in play too? I know little about the area but know that can make a big difference.
I am thinking of renting a car while I am there so that I can explore so maybe I can get to the neighboring communities.

Too bad I missed seeing George! I’m actually heading out prior to Friday unfortunately. But thank you for the information and I will see what’s going on around that area.

Wow, thank you for letting me know about the history I didn’t realize that! Yes, I am certainly down with barbecue and biscuits and I will do that for sure!

Probably the most traditional and dynamic university scene in America in probably the perfect location. Music on every level is abundant, from grunge to symphony, even 'North Carolina Beach Music' which has nothing to do with any music from the 'Left Coast'.

I am only there for three days and so trying to decide what to do. I would like to see Wilmington and Asheville but it would probably be better to stick to the Durham, Chapel Hill Raleigh area. My daughter as a friend in Raleigh, which is why we are staying there.

I was able to see Steve and Riley and Ernest Turner in Durham last night (Friday). They were amazing! Stephen Riley plays on this really hard reed and so it was really interesting but what a great player! It was really a unique place in Durham that has jazz and a lot of education stuff. It had a little tables with candles and everything- so cute! Highly recommended!

If you decide to come to Charlotte let me know… they have things going on multiple nights every week and the monthly museum jazz gigs were are great too.
My daughter really liked the school and so hopefully she’ll be going there at some point and I can visit more. I really like North Carolina. I wouldn’t mind moving there to be honest!
