Hi,
I've been using a Link Tone Edge 6* for several years and was quite happy with it.
I always had problems with the high notes/palmkeys and thought I would just need some practice.

Finally I got my hands on a Lawton 9 plain HR.

My high note problems are solved, but I like the full and rich sound of the Link better.
I already figured out, that I don't like the (modern) Meyers and the Bergs.

Soundwise I really like Phil Woods or Kenny Garret.

Would be great I any of the Gurus could give me a hint which kind of design I should try.

thx

A lot of people are going to suggest a Ralph Morgan "L" chamber piece for this horn type and the sound you're after....and I'm one of them!

The Morgan "Large chamber" will be like the best vintage Meyer you've ever played. The "L" chamber is a tad darker than Ralph's medium chambers, and works very well with large bore horns such as you're Martin (I also own a Martin, and the Morgan works wonders on it!). It is a very free blowing mouthpiece, you should have no problems hitting the palm keys...and they'll sound GREAT too!

Hi,
thx for the info. These two MPCs are a bit hard to get here in Germany, but I might have a try.

Another piece that works well on a Martin Alto, and that you can get anywhere easily, is a Selmer Super Session. I go back and forth between that and a Morgan 7M - I hear more echoes of Kenny Garrett when I use the Super Session (I believe he uses a Selmer Soloist). I'm using the "D" opening.

I'll give the Selmer a shot...

A friend of mine owns one, but she doesn't likes it, when someone uses her gear...^^
