Excellent work! Thanks for posting this, really helpful. I like the potential of the Rousseau Studio Jazz 8 the best, nice soft and dark tone, but can be pushed. Way too open for me, the Morgan sounded equally good and versatile.

I think you get a nice Cannonball like tone with the DV, it certainly doesn't scream metal piece to me.

Sorry, but I hated the Dukoff.

Nice playing, and great how you played pieces that suited each mouthpiece.

I personally like ur recording sound with the yamaha 5c. strange........ it has a nice even tone and clean and really like cannonball or parker type of tone.
I second that. Though the Yamaha is the cheapest of the bunch, I seemed to prefer the sound you get from that piece compared to the others.

What is the tip opening of the 5C? Does Yamaha offer a piece with a tip opening of around .0080"?

You GAS killer!!:x ;) Great work man! I agree, the Yamaha 5C sounds incredible, but I am sold on the ESP with the spoiler in. I love the way it sounds.

hmm guess I'm the odd one out lol... not a fan of the yamaha's sound at all.
I like the sound of the Rousseau Studio and Lebayle ebonite a lot. Think they're my favs.

It's strange, I've wanted a metal mouthpiece for quite awhile but everytime I plan to get one, I change my mind because when I'm being honest I just plain seem to like the sound better on HR/ebonite. I do like the Jody jazz DV, but not really all around... I think it's the high end I'm not fond of.. not quite sure though. In my opinion from what I've heard/tried I just can't come across a metal mouthpiece that has as much diversity as a non-metal while having a nice tone too. I think I like a drak tone much better than bright, and I guess that's my problem with finding a metal that suits me...

Anyway, sorry for the rant haha. Awesome post though, I wish there were more of these around to help out with finding a mouthpiece sound you like without having to go and buy them (or find some random ones that a store might carry to try out). Thanks!

It's all in how YOU play these pieces. I sound way different on my DV than Al does. Still, a great post and very interesting to hear all the differences.

Yamaha only offers plastic mouthpieces in the following models for
the alto saxophone
Tip opening in MM and Inch's
Model YAC 1285 3C 1.5mm .059"
Model YAC 1286 4C 1.6mm .0629" .063" rounded up
Model YAC 1287 5C 1.7mm .0669" .067" rounded up
Model YAC 1288 6C 1.8mm .070"

All of these have the long facings... 23mm
I wish they made a hard rubber .080" model, but they don't.
the 4C is perfect for 5th graders or other beginners.
Bird played on 2 different plastic mouthpieces
One was a Brilhart Tonalin and the other was a Runyon, both in the white color.
Good Luck!!
