Hi, I have just purchsed a Yanagisawa Alto 901, and although a Yanagisawa mouthpiece 6 came with it, I find it a bit hard work (wide) for me, can you please suggest a suitable mouthpiece please? I cant try any, (too far to travel) but I am wondering between a Selmer c* or a Selmer c** I am using a rico 2 and a vandoran 1.1/2 reed, I suppose what I am asking is a safe buy. A good all rounder.But I dont want any edge,harshness,volume,I am looking for roundness,warmth,dark,mellow. sound, thanks.....

You'll get lots of advice, I'm sure. But for an "all around" mouthpiece I'd go with the Selmer S80 C*. In a lot of schools and universities it is a standard. But there are lots of others I'll let someone else share with you. Best of luck!

I'll second the recommendation on the S80... mine's a C**, I like those quite a lot for "legit" playing...

Not sure about the soft reeds on that setup though... a 3- 3 1/2 (after being broken in) was what I used. Typically, I started with a vandoren 4 and balances, adjusted side, etc...

I would think most good-playing alto pieces will work on this horn. The Yanagisawa line is about as good as it gets these days - an A901 I tested a few years ago was terrific and played well with my personal set-up.

Right now I'm using an S-80 C* with a Fibracell 1 1/2, or a Meyer 6S-M with ZZ #2 adjusted reeds and those set-ups play on every alto to which I affix them. DAVE

JodyJazz HR is very warm, free-blowing, and they seem very consistent. One of my fav HR pieces.

Thanks everyone for your careful advice, I have just got a vandoren size 1 today and combined with the yani mp is perfect! I can play from top to bottom effortlessly and I can play quiet or loud I am very pleased! So thanks to all who helped me once again.No mouthpiece merry go round for a long time, (famous last words) lol
