After many years of playing tenor sax, both as a pro and in a very active family group; I've tested / trialed many more mouthpieces then I can keep accurate count of. The two mouthpieces I have been useing and have finally settled for are a Morgan Jazz 8L and a Excalibur
7EL. They both sound alike to me however I like to use much harder reeds then usual on occasion - which seem to play better on the 7EL. Perhaps I haven't looked far enough ??? However in all my playing over the years I never met a sax player I was familiar with who played a Morgan or heard of a pro who did. Mine produce the finest sound / etc., etc., (you know all the virtues) that I have ever found in any other mpc. I've played quite a few that would satisfy me very well -- but not as much as the Morgans. The OLD SHOE postulate. Does anyone know a pro who uses MORGAN ? Or are we a tiny group of unique GUMBAS enjoying the secret mouthpiece Valhalla ? Thanks in advance, TONY

You and I are very alike. I play Morgon on my soprano, alto, and tenor. I even just picked up another one today for my tenor. They are easily the best mouthpieces I have ever played. Worth every cent.

I know several working players who use them. I had a Jazz 9M for a while. It was a very good mouthpiece but Im more comfortable with a larger chamber. As soon as I have another 250 bucks to blow Im getting a Jazz 9L, or I migt try the new ML.

He may not be a full time "pro" yet but adam larson is most definitely going to be a big name some day and aslong as he keeps on playing his morgan 8e, he'll be in the club of people who have discovered how great morgan mouthpieces are.

I believe Adam is playing on Bari mouthpieces now, he was just featured in their latest ad in JAZZED magazine. I used to play a Morgan, I switched to a Jody Jazz DVNY about 3 years ago. My morgan served me very well, it was a great piece. I switched because there was a bit more flexibility in the Jody Jazz, at least for me. I don't think you can go wrong with a morgan.

I know he definitely uses bari mpcs on soprano and I believe now on Alto as well, however to my knowledge he still plays one on tenor (not to mention all else fails they do both look quite similar with the metal shanks so he could probably get away with using a morgan from a pure aesthetics perspective without the people at bari noticing too easily

Jason Hunter, who now lives in Kincardine, Ontario plays a Morgan on his 10M.

I use Morgans on clarinet, bass sax, and sometimes on alto and tenor sax. I played woodwinds exclusively for a living for years, and I still get half my income from playing, so I guess I'm a pro.
Morgans are great mouthpieces.

I've been a working player for 5 decades. I've never witnessed another player using Morgan mouthpieces but that shouldn't be a criteria to judge the pieces. If you like it and it does what you want and need it to do that should be all that matters.

Brian Patneaude, a pro out of the Albany, NY area, started out on a Guardala but has been playing a Morgan 8EL for several years now - he played the Morgan on his most recent couple albums, and I like the warmer sound he's getting on the Morgan. His stuff is available on iTunes.

I remember an article on Ben Ellman from Galatic saying he used a Morgan Excalibur. It was a few years ago, don't know if he's changed.

I love Morgans. Last summer, I bought an Excaliber from Sam Sadigursky who is a NYC pro player. He said that he plays Morgans, but that this particular Morgan was too closed for him. I like more closed pieces and the Excaliber and my Morgan Jazz pieces are great. No one would confuse me with a pro, but I like the Excaliber for a big band/west coast jazz tone and the Jazz piece for a Coltrane-esque tone (ROFL if you've actually heard me.)

Love both my 6EL and 7EL Excaliburs and Jazz 6M pieces I own. Looking to try a Jazz Large chamber as well. One of my favorite pieces on tenor. Looking forward to trying one on alto as well. It is odd you don't hear pros using these as I prefer them to anything out there.

I AM N*O*T A PRO...

But I play a 7EL on both Alto (1963 Mark VI) and Tenor (1940 BA). I played both last night at a rehearsal with a small group (Trumpet / Trombone / Sax) and a rhythm section for a choral production and I was struck at how I could bring the Sax sound out clearly with the brass and even overpower them at times.

I am a big fan of the Ralph Morgan mouthpieces.
