I have heard good things about this piece and may consider getting one. How are the modern ones? the $200ish price tag isn't too steep for me, but i need some feedback on the modern ones, as most people always talk about the vintages.

I assume we're talking tenor as this is in the Tenor Forum - I had one for a while, it was a modern made piece, from the serial number Erik Greiffenhagen was able to confirm that he'd made it - I thought it was great, very flexible, it could play punchy or velvety smooth, with plenty of volume or down to a whisper - I sold it though as I settled on an old HR Link and thought it should be played rather than sitting in a drawer. I wouldn't have any hesitation buying a one new if I ever wanted another.
BTW the model I had was an 8*EL, Excalibur with a large chamber, 105 tip opening.

I only played the one Tenor piece as I bought it used from 10mfan - but I can vouch for Erik G's work, it's just superb, many on the forum will say the same. I also had a modern made Excalibur for alto, which was also very good (but sold it as it was too narrow a tip for me). Morgan also use a good quality hard rubber for their pieces not plastic. The pieces just work really well, and for the money are excellent value - and the modern pieces are hand finished by two of the best in the business, Erik Greiffenhagen and Brian Powell (both of whom apprenticed with Ralph Morgan).

sorry to revive the thread, but would you consider it a piece(im planning on getting and excalibur) almost bright enough for pop fusion? i dont play pop fusion, i just want something that has the ability to be played bright, as i blow pretty dark.

Hi SS: These pieces are great, very flexible and definitely towards the brighter end of things, for a large chamber roll-over baffle type piece. Ultra fast articulation too. I used one as my main piece for a number of years on my Conn and bought a second one as a backup during that time but have since moved on to a new horn that prefers a different mouthpiece, and I am keeping my original with all the hours on it, but would consider selling the backup. 8*EL (same opening as a 7* on most mouthpieces). Send me a PM if you want to discuss further. Cheers!

I currently play a new 8*EMLL on a 1946 King Zephyr. It's flexible enough to channel your inner Stan Getz or unleash it for a rock/fushion band (and everything in between). The intonation and response are spot-on. Other pieces I tried are Link Tone Edge and Link STM. This Morgan is the last piece I'll ever buy.

sounds great. so they're horn picky? how would they do on modern japanese horns?
Not picky at all, I guess there's just something subtle that I like better about my current piece (soloist) on my Selmer. I am keeping one of them for sure, but just don't need two anymore. In my opinion these excaliburs can hang with the best mouthpieces out there (I've tried lots of them), they're just not in vogue currently.
