whats up guys. were talking alto here. i wanted to order a new mouthpiece to experiment with and was wondering.. what modern mouthpieces are the closest thing to the old brilhart personalines? i am in love with eric dolphy n his sound and am well aware that it doesnt just come from his setup, but wanted to experiment. i currently play a meyer medium chamber .078 tip with lavoz medium reeds. its a great setup but just wanted to try getting something similar to the personaline and work on it for some type of exotic sound. any info about either dolphy's setup which i know was custom, or just the standard characteristics of the personaline and modern similarities would help. thank you very much!!

I have owned (and sold) a Brilhart HR Personaline for alto, which is what Dolphy played on. I own a handful of white and one black (plastic) Personalines for alto. The black one is very good. The white ones are fabulous, but they do not sound like the HR Personaline. The difference is difficult to explain, but if I say that the white ones sound like first class, Swiss milk chocolate, the HR sounded like dark (86% cocoa) chocolate. A modern Yanagisawa would be close, soundwise. Another close is the (plastic) Personaline (B) s/n 11535 I have for sale: See http://www.saxmundstykker.dk/MPC_Alto.html
Hope this helps.

Get an L chamber Beechler plastic mouthpiece to substitute for the Ebolin/Tonalin Personalines, and there isn't really anything that compares to the HR Personalines. Earlier ones had a large Reso Chamber-like chamber for tenor, and the later ones are like a Meyer medium chamber tenor piece. The altos are like a Meyer but almost like an "in between" size of chamber (medium/small). Also nothing really compares to that old rubber, it's great stuff.
