lots of stuff about him published before.

There is nothing particularly “ avant-garde “ to his playing. He is a very talented player with a very developed sense of showmanship.

See many more references in previous threads (there are more, these are specifically dedicated to him) again, a search through the archives would have helped keeping information in one place.

I did do a search on this and other forums but came up with nothing on him. Thanks for the links.

you probably use the wrong page to search

go here
https://www.saxontheweb.net

the box on top of the page, in the middle says “ Google Custom Search”

Type Leo Pellegrino you get 10 hits.

Any other place to search won’t return you the results that THAT box on THAT page gives.

as for Avant -Garde saxophone playing Pellegrino is certainly spectacular but doesn’t come even close to the definition of experimental or avant-garde playing.

The first is for laughs only:twisted:

OK I should have used the general search, can't think why I didn't.

In light of the above, I withdraw 'avant guard' and substitute 'unorthodox'

by the way this is a version of Moaning as played by the “ original’ Player, if you put this against Leo Pellegrino’s playing ( with the respect that he deserves) there is nothing unorthodox either there!

Leo Pellegrino’s version is (aside from the Show) a fairly traditional rendition of this classic. How could it be ay different? It’s the BBC proms!

Leo Pellegrino is all over You tube especially because the performances in the Subway or Underground or French railways are always filmed by the multitudes

Leo Pellegrino - misuser and abuser of the saxophone or brilliant avant guard musician?
Neither! His antics are for entertainment purposes, and his playing is top notch, brilliant yes, and a lot of it is in the mainstream of jazz. Highly rhythmic, melodic, lots of bebop style playing. And what a fantastic version of the Mingus tune Moanin'!

Maybe some of what he does could be called avant-garde, but I think it's more 'showmanship' as milandro says.
