I love Brecker, and like most tenor players my age, went through a Brecker phase in the 80's. What struck me about this recording was his tone. Anyone know if this time period would have been before he switched to Guardalas?

Weird,

I listened to to the recording and it's kind of funny. At the beginning where he's playing the head I was saying to myself "wow! you're right. He does sound different" Fuzzier than I'm used to for Brecker. But as soon as he started improvising then the Brecker sound came through. with only very subtle hints of that fuzzyness.

Brecker was constantly experimenting with gear. Who knows? He could have used a different mouthpiece just on this session and then switched to something else.

Picture of him on the album cover has him playing what sure looks like a Guardala (skinny profile, selmer lig) - guess that doesn't mean anything, since it could have been taken som other time or place, but I always assumed it was an early Guardala. Sure sounds like a Guardala when he starts blowing...

The pic at 2;22 shows him playing what looks like a short shank Dukoff. Funny that they went to the trouble of making a collage of Gadd when it is Chick playing drums.
I notice that too. I don't know if there are any clips out there but Michael Brecker was also a very good drummer.
