mic sensitivity

I have a Mark VI Variotne. I no longer have the amp or control box. I have connected a jack to the wire coming out if the mic in the neck. The problem is: the mic is to sensitive to get any real volume. It picks up actual breathing and if you tap the mental mouthpiece it comes through the speaker. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I also play with a mic on my tenor neck. I plug into a small mixer to control the volume. The mixer is 4 channel and is about 4"x6" and sits on the floor.
If I bring a keyboard to a gig the mixer sits on it and I have volume control of the sax, keyboard and vocal mic. before it gets sent to the PA.
Mosax,
Here's a link to the mixer. Signalflex MM-40
I got mine several yrs. ago I believe under $30.
My pickup is a RB mic. about the size of a thumbnail. Dates back to the 60's.
