I'm currently playing alto on a Meyer 5J Metal piece. What reeds can help me get an edgier, brighter tone, like for rock or funk? I'm currently looking at Vandoren V16, Bari Synthetic, and Rico Plasticover. Thanks.

I've actually played on all of these reeds. The Bari just sounds like plastic... I'm not a fan. V16's were my general reed for a while, and they're nice, but they got inconsistent and I switched to V12's to get a darker tone. I marched Plasticovers a couple years ago--they're loud, and super bright! You barely even have to wet them to play. They might get you the sound you want. My only complaint is that they don't last very long--a few weeks at most.

For me, it doesn't get any edgier or brighter then a Rico Plasticover. I play my R&B/Rock gigs on a Meyer 6m with a Rico Plasticover, it screams.
