Play the metronome at a comfortable speed. Pat your foot every beat (1-2-3-4) as accurately as you can for at least 5 minuets without playing instrument. Then do the same thing patting foot on beats 1 & 3 for at least 5 minuets. Then beats 2 & 4 for at least 5 minuets. That way you will eventually relax with the tempo and lock into your internal metronome. Then you should be good at playing with your patting foot with or without music playing. 5 minuets, because that's a good length like a complete song.
