hey,
I'm looking to branch out from my HR Berg (105/2/M) with a metal piece. For a change. Basically I'm just swamped by all the difference, and was hoping some of you resident experts could help me make a list of pieces to try out to help me narrow this down. Thanks!

A metal piece, per se, won't give you a "richer, more complex" sound; HR can be equally complex and rich. I played for years on metal Links and SS Bergs, and have come to rest with a wonderful RPC hr piece. That said, a Link is likely the starting point for comparison. Best get thee to a large, well-stocked, and patient music store where you can try out many different pieces, figure out what works for you.

yeah i see your point. i changed my wording a little in the og post. I'm definitely going to do the music store run, just looking for somewhere to start. links seem to be the jump-off, but it seems a ton of them have to get refaced

This is true, glad to see someone else say it besides me. The material has absolutly no bearing on sound. I've made mouthpieces from seven different materials and there's no difference when the dimensions are the same. If you want to go budget, get a Link and choose your reeds. If you can go more pricy then look at mine although there's a wait. Happy hunting.
