I visited one of my local shops today to see if they had a horn in stock I was interested in. While there I saw a huge vintage horn on display I had never seen there before. The owner told me it was a Mark VI bass saxophone!! I never even knew something like that existed. He said he was getting it fixed up to be put on sale. So if anyone is looking for a bass Mark VI, I know where to find one.

Mark VI bass was made well into the late '80 it is not a " rare instrument" (in as much as Basses are " common") Douglas Pipher, I am sure could tell you exactly how many were made but I am sure that the

number runs in hundreds in the near 40 years when they made them

of course the matter of their existence and value was also addressed earlier

Interestingly enough these things seem to have a completely bimodal reputation - half say they're horribly out of tune and half say they're great horns. Have never tried one myself. They are pretty rare in the US as we have a sizable supply of old Conns and Bueschers so I think few of the Selmers were ever bought.

They have a reputation for sounding a bit "polite" compared with the old Conn and Buescher basses.

Interestingly the saxophone shop in Oxford, Allegro Music (aka "Saxophone Heaven") has had a 1984 Selmer MkVI bass for sale on commission for a long, long time - I would guess over eight years. In that time period the price of new Selmer bass saxophones has gone up and up to the point where their selling price begins to look quite attractive.
