Our quartet has a 3 hour gig coming up in December, and my wife also has a dress rehearsal that evening, so I'm looking for any leads on mixed trios, either SAT, AAT, or ATB. It's ostensibly a Christmas gig (background music at an art gallery) but we are *not* limiting ourselves to Christmas music. Anybody got anything?

Seems like the wrong approach to me.

First, I think you'd have difficulty finding all new trio music for a three-hour gig that's less than two months away. Wouldn't you need about 30 new pieces?

Second, why subject all three of you to learning new music when you can subject only one person to doing this?

In short, I think you need to find a sub who's a good sight reader and go with the music you have and know. If you're looking for more quartet music, seasonal or otherwise, I can help you out.

I agree with Transcriber-arranger. A sub seems like the best way to go. I noticed on your profile that you're a music educator. Surely there must be a skilled enough saxophone player in your area who would jump at the opportunity. Perhaps even a talented student who could handle the parts reasonably well and benefit from the experience at the same time?

I guess I need to clarify: my wife (the alto player) has to leave an hour early from the 3 hour gig (I'm starting to hear Gilligan's Island there!), leaving us only about an hour to fill. The soprano player is already bringing his alto for those quartets that are arranged AATB, and *I* certainly have no problem shifting over to alto. Finally, I think we enjoy the challenge of learning something new, and of re-arranging. So, now, any ideas?

Aha moment follows:

You're not looking for a trio, you're looking for trio arrangements.

You'd have thought that would be obvious given where you posted it, but those of us that click on "New Posts" (self included) regularly don't always notice which subforum we're in. :)

I think you need to look for some trio music. Oh, you already concluded that, didn't you? Sorry, but I have no trios or ideas to offer. I'm strictly a quartet person. As a matter of fact, I can't even contend that, since we just added bass and drums making six!

Well, now I have to retract my statement about having no ideas. I might have one. If you have a difficult time finding trios, you might be able to find duets of standards that have a bass part that the bari can play.
