I've been playing on this vintage metal berg for a few years now and I'm looking for something with more power, I'd love a durga 3 for my bari but they aren't in my price range. Any suggestions on pieces like a durga?

I just bought a chinese no-name metal piece that has a super high baffle like the durga for $45. I assume it will not play very well but its a Lawton copy and can be refaced to my needs.

Could try to find a gen 1 or 2 Durga on the used market. Probably has a decent discount on it.

I am very interested in durgas but I'm afraid that if I get a durga 1 It'll be significantly worse than a durga 3 or 4. Do you know if it's still a good piece or is it smarter to save for a 3?

Not from experience, I've never had the chance with Theo's pieces, but I remember when they first came out and everyone was talking about how amazing they were. So, yes, I don't imagine anything theo has made is anything less than a great piece.

It may not be easy to get a Durga 3 since I don't think Theo is making them anymore and there don't seem to be many places that have them in stock. I'm not sure there was a Durga 2. If there was it wasn't around for long. I'm also not sure how the 3 and 4 compare or why when the 3 was so well received by most, Theo felt like he needed to change it.

I have an original Durga in a .115 tip and I don't consider it particularly powerful compared to my Jody Jazz pieces or even a Link STM with a bit of added baffle. The original Durga has a high baffle but what you don't see in most pictures is that the chamber is huge. This combination for me plays with less volume and edge than you might expect just looking at it. I haven't had the opportunity to play a Durga 3 bari but my impression based upon reviews and pictures is that the design is more similar to the JJ DV so I'd expect it to have more projection as well as being a bit brighter than the original. If you don't mind a piece that plays with a little more buzz you could try a Shiva as well.

At the end of the day a big powerful sound on bari mostly comes from moving a lot of air and playing with a great deal of support. A piece with more baffle and a smaller chamber may give you the impression of more power at first from behind the horn but it's often just a lot of extra buzz that doesn't project particularly well. Without knowing what tip and chamber size the Berg you're presently playing is, it's hard to speculate what would even be "more powerful" than what you already have. Theo makes some nice pieces (as do several others) but just because you spend $800 on a piece doesn't mean it's automatically doing to sound better than what you already have.

Thank you this is very helpful, I've been looking into the jody jazz pieces and I'm unsure which piece is best the DV or the superjet does anyone know if there is a significant difference in the two? And also how do they compare to the durgas?

The SuperJet is going to be much brighter than the DV. Based upon the pictures I've seen I'd suspect the Durga 3 is similar to the JJ DV and the Shiva is probably more like the Jet or SuperJet. You might want to try the JJ Jet. They are much cheaper then the metal pieces around $230 new and you may be able to find a used one for much less.

It's a 110/2 with a somewhat custom facing because I had to have the table flattened because it was uneven.
Yeah, that's not a power piece there. Do you like Bergs though? You could always try one with a 1 or 0 chamber. Just seems silly to drop hundreds of dollars for a piece you've never tried. Just make sure you can either return it or don't overspend on a used piece so you can flip it for the same value should it not work out.

The most guts I have ever gotten out of a mouthpiece was a JodyJazz DV 8. It takes all of your air and begs for more, but to me comes at a price. It's loud for the sake of loud and I just didn't find much tonal flexibility in it.

I have a Jet, and it’s very loud and and I think powerful, but I also think people have different ideas about what is powerful.

Another option is to buy an STM and add, or have someone else add, some baffle. I recommend mojobari for that.
