Hi all,

I've recently been trying a bunch of mouthpieces (Thanks John Griener!), and one special one I got to try was an Otto Link Tone Edge EB. I'd love to own one of those one day maybe, but my search has led me here. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for mouthpieces that are similar to EB Links? I really liked the sound I was getting from it. It had a rich lower end, but the top of the horn (High C, Palm Keys etc) had such a bright shimmer to it, and it was almost impossible to put the horn away! I'm also open to any suggestions really... I'm not looking for a screamer, but something flexible enough to give me a bright sound when I push it, but can be controlled!

Let me know if anyone wants some more info!

Thanks all

Welcome, D. Shout out to John, please. I miss him.

I am surprised that he didn't have any suggestions for you.

G'luck in your quest.

Morgan makes an Indiana model which is a takeoff on the early Babbitt. I happen to have one for sale if you are interested. You can contact me directly if you are interested. Otherwise, there are loads of other people making copies of the same pieces.

Check out Bob Reynolds on youtube. He plays a modern Tone Edge, and sounds fantastic. I play one too. Quality piece, cheap and plentiful. No complaints.

I also have a Morgan which I like even better. But they're not as easy to find and more expensive. They've got more edge than the Link.

Glad you were able to hook up with John. What a great guy and a great player.

Thanks for the reply! I'll check them out. I've tried modern TE's before, and I love Bob's playing, but I find it doesn't quite give me what I'm looking for! I've known John for years now, and he always has helpful things to say!

+1 for the Ted Klum Florida. Mouthpiece Café Primo is also an EB copy that's amazing and isn't that expensive. Then you have the Drake Bergonzi EB Master Series. All of those three models plays as well or better than the original EBs I've tried.

I bet the Morgan Indiana is great to!

Another vote for the Ted Klum Hard Rubber Florida model. Contact him through his website. If you subscribe to his newsletter he will let you know about "ready to go mouthpieces" and discounts. July 4 th is coming so I would expect him come up with a "Sale" but I am just speculating.

I would echo the recommendations that have already been made plus 1 additional one:

1. Ted Klum Florida
2. Otto Link Tone Edge (modern one)
3. Ben Allen 10E Jazzmaster

With the Tone Edge, you may have to do some work to it, but sometimes you find a good one that plays great right out of the box. This might be your least expensive option and sometimes all it needs is a little sanding of the table.

The Ted Klum’s come up for sale used every once in a while, but I would do what others have suggested and sign up on Ted’s website or just email him to find out if there any ready-to-ship models; I got one from that sale for a lower price.

The Ben Allen pieces are great too and give you a very well finished piece a very affordable prices.

BTW - I have all 3, so this is just my suggestion based on my experience

My absolute favorite is a regular ol’ hard rubber V16 T8. I have not been able to find anything I like better. I think it’s more like a rubber version of a Florida STM than a TE, not sure about that.
