Hey everyone, I had a question for those who had a much greater wealth of experience than mine, I grew up playing saxophone when I was a child, kind of fell off for a while, and now am just getting back into it. (I realized recently that too much of my weekly entertainment was coming in the passive form i.e. TV)

Anyway, looking for a bit of a muse, I am trying to find some good Saxophone artists to listen to, and was looking for some advice. The saxophone music I enjoy the most is typically higher tempo acoustic / rock-ish, I don’t love traditional improvisational style jazz (I enjoy it on occasion, just not all the time), and the electronic urban smooth jazz style (a la Kenny G) I really don’t like. One of my favorite albums was Dave Koz’s, Off the Beaten Path, particularly his up tempo tracks. I didn’t really enjoy much else of his work though (a bit too smooth jazz for me, though perhaps I haven't listened to enough of his other work).

With these criteria, is there a chance that someone would be able to suggest some artists I might enjoy? Thanks in advance for any help!

You didn't mention any particular sax (alto, tenor, etc.) so I'll assume you're interested in all of them.

OK, well then I won't mention Paul Desmond or Dexter Gordon

I'm not sure how close this comes, but I think you'll enjoy it. Check out King Curtis - Live at Fillmore West. http://www.amazon.com/Live-at-Fillmore-West-Dlx/dp/B000FBG06C/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1318622004&sr=8-7
