Hi
Here are quite a few videos I made while in Taiwan. I used what ever was in the pro shop. I hope it might help you decide what you do and don't like. It has certainly helped me!
Mouthpieces
Sopranino-- Plastic--Came with horn, and a soprano #3 reed
Alto-- jodi Jazz hr 9-- 3 reed
Tenor-- Otto link 127 opening worked on by by Adam Neiwood ( 4 Hard jazz select)
The tenor comparisons are 76ul, 86ul,86bl,86 silver plate, 76 silver plate,87, king super 20, selmer mark 6, selmer super action series 3 and challenger 101. There is some overlap, and I am no film editor, and the sound was just on a hand held Sony. The altos -- all I had that was not Mauriat was a mark 6, but thats cool!

TENOR LINKS-- I was lucky there was a martin, selmer series 3, super 20 and mark 6, but what I find really interesting is the differences between the mauriats. There is plenty of the 87 here too- a horn that really got my interest.

ALTO LINKS. Of particular interest are the 67UL and 76UL videos alongside the mark 6 ( video 1) and check out video 3 -- the 300 solid silver is incredible ( and very expensive!)

SOPRANO COMPARISONS- not such a good job done by me here. I start pretty rough with the old tuning till I get my lip in!. Interesting hearing the curved sops against straight-- but inconclusive really as they are all different models. It might however be useful to someone.

SOPRANINO VRS SOPRANO LINK. Now I reckon this is real interesting. You can hear the range and sounds here of a sopranino vrs a straight soprano. Very different horns and I love the 'Nino!. I was new to the Nino-- only have played them a couple of times and friends places, but was suprised how quickly I got in to the 'nino

STRAIGHT SAXOPHONE COMPARISON. This is interesting too- you can hear the Nino, 76 sop, 101 alto and 101 tenor played after each other. Different sounds and I think quite fascinating!

There you go. I am not a dealer in any way, but I do endorse mauriat. I just thought This was a wonderful opportunity to help myself out first, Mauriat and sax kind!- I have tried to simply play them side by side without bias between models. - I wish there had been more variety of saxophones in the shop ( Yamahas, Yannis, Keilworths etc) however, there was plenty of mark 6's, so that will be helpful.

Best regards
Roger

This is so very cool! The Silver 86 and the Super 20 sound the best in my ears. The straight tenor really is so very good as well.

Good job Roger.

Great! i really enjoy this. Thanks for posting Roger. The 87 had a similar focus to the MKVI but the MKVI had some more edge and clearity. I agree with you that the 86BL had a great BIG and beautiful sound! But neither of them played smooth jazz!!!???

The 87 sounds interesting and has the most different sound to my ears.

What is the difference between the 86BL and the 86 silver plate? To me they sound and even more look very similar on the videos.

Thanks for your replies-- re 87
I was really taken by the 87-- i just kept on going back to it. A real interesting sounding saxophone, and I will be going back to the videos to really listen again and again. The funny thing Is that of all the Mauriats the 87 was the sax I least expected to like!, but still a real contrast to my 86UL ( which is still my favorite-- but could be complimented nicely by an 87!!!) ..or..
----that 86BL had that beautiful broad crisp clear tone... and the 76UL!! and the 66!!. They all sound great.

I love the sound of that 86, and look forward at some point play-testing one. I was glad to hear you say they're free-blowing.

Damn-- I should have played them side by side. 86BL- nickel with gold plated bell and 86 silver. I was really struck by the openness and clarity of the BL more than all the Mauriats, it had a brisk clear sound, and to me the 86 silver plate had a bit more warmth to it. I couldn't say what I liked better-- prob the 86BL would be my choice because you could colour that sound how you wanted it

Thanks for the comparisons Roger. Your videos makes me love my 66UL even more. But I do wish I had to cash to buy the 86UL ;0). It's may be worth getting a second job for awhile!

What mouthpiece are you using on the curved soprano. Sounds great.

sent from Mikey's Super Inspire 4G
On The sopranos I was using a jodi jazz 8* HR ( made to order, and a litter darker than stock. However I was using that as i left My Greg Weir HR 9 at home-- ( Link style) Best Roger

The 66UL is a beast. I borrowed one for gig a couple of weeks back, and I used an old selmer long shank #115 on it. A perfect match for that horn. Makes me want to get one of them!

I love the straight alto sound!

How much are those?

Thanks for the great post!!!
Not sure on price, but I am pretty sure they will not cost more. I really loved the straight alto too-- I have been thinking about it, and the tenor a lot since I go home. I found them immensely enjoyable to play

did you happen to play the 66RUL-satin silver tenor while you were there? I'm curious to learn how that compares with the "regular" UL.

thanks!
great videos!
