Haven't seen this before, and it's glorious:
maybe my horn is lester's oneI'll bet none of you cats have ever played with a cigarette in your hand. The ashes fall down into the crook of the bow and your fimgers get yellow from the tar. Haven't done that in 35 years and don't miss it.
My first teacher when I was in High School did that...It was the coolest thing I ever saw; if that didn't make me start smoking, nothing will.I'll bet none of you cats have ever played with a cigarette in your hand. The ashes fall down into the crook of the bow and your fimgers get yellow from the tar. Haven't done that in 35 years and don't miss it.
Actually I have. Can't do that at a gig anymore, it's essentially illegal nearly everywhere now.I'll bet none of you cats have ever played with a cigarette in your hand. The ashes fall down into the crook of the bow and your fimgers get yellow from the tar. Haven't done that in 35 years and don't miss it.
Indeed priceless! The drummer at the start is Big Sid Catlett. Also nice to hear in the first chorus of his solo that Illinois was heavily influenced by the great Herschel Evans. And what about Sweets Edison? He played great during a very very long career in jazz. That's an awesome clip... anyone else dig those dancers too. They were great. Of course, high-quality video of Prez and Illinois Jacquet playing... priceless.
And that bit at the beginning with the first drummer "handing off" to Papa Jo Jones...all those guys were having a blast. Great times!!!
Thanks, Jazz Is All! I hope everybody checks out this WAAAYY improved version of the clip -- as JIA notes, it's more than twice as long, with some great stuff! Amazing...the thing is that the clip you posted is a 4 minute abbreviated one and the one I watched is 6 minutes longer and begins with the credits and a lot more. Better quality video too.
It's the cigarette. That's the secret!I always wondered how the Prez was able to play the sax sideways like that. I tried that once and within minutes my thumbs were killing me.
Jazz Is All, thanks -- I appreciate that, and I hope it's useful info! And in the meantime, I'm gonna dig this video again...Hey Kelly I really love your blog. Lots of very helpful stuff in there. I just read your article on long tones and think it's great....making me realize that I have to quit avoiding them as well as giving me insight and aid into how to do them effectively. I just thought I'd let you know cause the stuff you do is really helping me out a lot. Thanks
