Does anyone know of a dealer that leases pro-level horns? I want to play some different pro-level altos. I'm thinking of changing from my vintage horn to a modern horn. Most dealers have a 1-3 day approval period. Sending a bunch of horns back and forth is a big pain. I'd rather get 1-3 horns and keep them for 1-3 months. I'm willing to pay for this.

Thanks.

You might be able to do a rent to own. You can rent it for 1 to 3 months and if your satisfied, keep on paying until you take ownership of it

Not offhand - because of the cost of the horn, what they can charge for rental, and the depreciation caused by it becoming used, it probably doesn't make sense for dealers to do that with new or expensive horns. But you are in SF, so go down to Union Music on Market, and see what they can/will do, and if they have something you are interested in. (They are very good about letting you try stuff in the store.) Maybe some repair techs might have some used pro-level horns they would rent. Try Lee Kramka in SF or Eric Drake in Berkeley, maybe Allegro Music in Fremont (and there is a place in San Rafael whose name I am forgetting).

I don't know about your area but in mine shops will only lease/rent student models month to month.
If you want a Pro horn you get the 3 day 'approval' period. If you want it longer you buy the horn.
There are exceptions!
If you are a well known 'Guest Artist' performing with the Symphony, DeVos Hall, Van Andel Arena... and your instrument was damaged (can't be repaired in time for performance) or 'delayed' during your travels they will 'loan' a pro horn for that performance.
I wanted to rent a low C bass clarinet to use in the pit and I got a "Sorry! We don't rent those to 'regular' people."
