This is perhaps not news to many on SotW, but I just wanted to post a note telling everybody just how great I think Matt Stohrer (aka abadcliche) is.
As some of you will recall, I lucked into a silver Conn Connqueror alto last year, which I eventually traded with Matt for some cash, a vintage mouthpiece, and a Martin Dick Stabile tenor. The tenor had been recently repadded, but not by Matt, and so he said that if there were any problems he'd take care of it.
Well, to make a long story short, I wasn't crazy about the set up, so Matt offered to do a complete repad. All I had to do was ship the horn back to him, and he took care of the rest. I got the sax back a couple of days ago, and I'm just blown away by the quality of the work he did: practically a complete overhaul, and meticulously done. The sax was nice before, but now it's just fantastic. I honestly can't believe I now own this suberbly restored vintage instrument.
The extraordinary integrity that Matt demonstrated in standing behind this horn--and remember he got no cash from me--is a big part of the story, but it's not all of it. The second thing I want to mention is that, at every single point in our dealings, Matt treated me like I was a top level pro player, right down to making sure that the work did not interfere with my schedule. This felt strange--I'm a rank amateur and have no gigs to speak of--but I also can't tell you how much I appreciated it.
Anyway, I'm sure there are lots of great techs out there who do the same kinds of things, but I just wanted everybody to know what a first class tech/dealer this guy is: I was ridiculously lucky to score the Connqueror, but that's really nothing compared to the good fortune I had in doing business with Matt.
Peace,
Rory
