I have not run across a serial number higher than the 237,xxx on my MkVI (and yes it is a MkVI). When I bought it new in 1976, I was told by the shop that was amongst the last of the MKVIs and based on every other listed number I have seen, this is close to the end.
I own a 238k VI alto. I once saw a second 238k VI alto whose serial was six numbers away from mine. I have seen someone else on SOTW mention and show pictures of their 239k VI alto.
My alto is 2403XX. It has no high F#. My soprano is 2662XX. It has a high F# key.
Both of these are in minty condition. I got them together around 1980 from a music store. They had belonged to a guy who owned a SATB set of VIs, and traded them in on a set of Coufs. He was very careful with his horns, so they looked pretty much brand new.
Since I play mostly tenor and bari, these 2 get very little playing time, and because I'm anal about my stuff, they still look like the day I bought them.
