I remember reading that Plas Johnson played on a .160 tip on tenor. If this is true did anyone ever play on something larger?

I recall that Ernie Watts plays a Plasticover 1 1/2 on a Link 0.165”.

I was recalling a conversation with Phil Barone, who said that he, too, made a mouthpiece for Ernie.
Perhaps. Note that the article I linked above also mentions that he had Otto Link make him mouthpieces ranging from 0.150 to 0.170, but that he wound up liking the 0.160 best. The equipment section of Ernie's website currently says that he's playing a #13 Otto Link (which the article says is the 0.160" tip opening) with a Fibercan or #2 Legere reed.

Well…I’ve surprised myself by settling on a .104 on soprano. It’s bigger than I thought practical, but it works very well.
I play a 8* on soprano but I could see going up to an 11 for certain things

I played a 9* rubber link for a year or so on soprano then moved to metal it is not as crazy as it sounds.
I play a lot of soprano and often lead for a 40 minute set it is hard on your face by the end of the night.

My .130 boat table Berg on bari is much easier.

I have a link 13* and a friend just got a 14 from Babbitt themself. Biggest I've ever heard of though... There's a story that pharoah Sanders brought his horn to a tech and the guy found a custom berg .250 in his case. That's head and tails bigger than anything else I've heard of.

Edit. Here's the actual info from my friend.

"There is a story kicking around town, that once when Pharoah was playing here, he had a Berg with a tip opening of 250 — this was from a repairman who serviced his horn, looked in his case."

The story about Ernie Watts is interesting. I’m not sure about Phil Barone making him a mouthpiece or not. I have never heard Ernie say that. I did hear him talk about his .160 and .165 tip opening pieces he had made. He talked about them in one of his masterclasses. I think you can find the video on YouTube. It should be the hour long one from PMWoodwind. I do know that he does have a significant baffle in it though. He talks about that too.

I don’t know how to respond except Pharoah could play without a mouthpiece and make it sound spiritual. Insane .125!!!!
