Is anyone aware of a service where you can get your brass horn black lacquered? I would love to have a black Yani.

maybe ....

...but if I may make a suggestion (after having seen enough back lacquer horns with wear in my life):

If THAT is the look you want, have it plated with black nickel plating. Much more durable....

Be aware, this is NOT a cheap endeavor whether a relacq or new plating job. You are looking at well over $1g....likely closer to $2g.

Borodi Music has to be a very good address for this.

https://www.borodimusic.com

Much criticized ( also by me) in the past for restoring to new conditions saxophones that were old and ended up looking like new (and sometimes with a degree of fantasy like the creation of versions that never existed in the first place) their machine , polishing and lacquer work is first class .

Counterfeits aside, it is a costly service. Yani has some great finishes though.

They do indeed, I just am at the age stage where I get to reward myself, and ever since seeing branford play his black nickel Guardala, I have loved this look. The options are mostly Keilwerth (which I already have), Selmer or Yamaha in the black, but I also have Yani alto and sop so wanted to complete the set......thanks for all the info.

The problem with Yanagisawa is the waiting list for special order instruments can easily exceed one year.

I can hook you up with a shop that may have it.

But if if not available right now at a distributor you will be waiting that much. Having a horn lacquered in black ( but we've been there several times with people asking) require total disassembling. It will cost you.

If you want a Yamaha , right away, here is one

Yep, I paint saxophones and other instruments every week. Its not cheap...... and a lot of work is imvolved

To get a solid colour on an existing saxophone you loose all your engraving unless its re-engraved afterwards and that becomes even more expensive.

Translucent colours are harder to do than a solid colour

..... Horns were routinely lacquered .

Until the '80 it would cost very little. Apparently there was a Mr. Carrubba in NYC who did, delacquer, buff and re lacquer for $14,50 for lots of repairers there! They brought the horn dismounted, no springs, and it was done in little time.
this I was told several times... once upon a time....
