Thorp in a Manual of Woodwind Repair suggests that Kraus stainless steel springs are the only wire springs-piano wire apparently- comparable in quality to blue steel needle springs.

However I gather blue steel needle springs are not necessarily what they used to be.

Are Kraus stainless steel springs better than jl Smith stainless steel springs and for that matter blue steel springs as these are sold today by Ferre?

Springs Can Really Hang You Up the Most

I have been getting my stainless springs from Kraus for years. I found them to be superior to the ones that came as original eqipment on many popular student brands. Because they do the job well, I have not looked elsewhere for
alternatives. I have been using JL Smith's blue needle springs for quite some time now. I found them to be superior to the ones I got from a previous supplier.
