I received a King Zephyre alto to "MakePlayable" AKA do as little as possible to make notes come out. It needs a repad, but I got it to play well by replacing a few pads and corks then regulating. It is going to a high school Kid who I'm told does not like the horn. Many of you will.

I snapped some pictures because it is a beautiful old instrument that some may like to see. Silver neck, lots of engraving, many pearl touch pieces.

Enjoy.

Re: King Zephyre Sax

I really hope you're joking.

Otherwise that's depressing...

Sounds like someone needs to buy the kid a modern 'shiny' sax to save that one from the abuse it will likely see by a student who doesn't know what it is and doesn't care.

I've seen a few amazing saxes be turned into beaters by students who will never be capable of appreciating the kind of sax they have.

Re: King Zephyre Sax

No, I'm not joking. The horn has been in the family through a number of musicians I was told and is being passed on to the youngest who is a good musician but not a sax player. It looks like they will probably take care of it, but may not appreciate it for what it is.

When I worked in the overhaul shop we rebuild quite a lot of these horns, but I haven't seen one this nice/original condition in a long time. I'm guessing it would be a real monster with a new set of pads and some modern bumper material applied in critical places.

A couple of weeks ago I re-padded a tenor just like that. Boy did it feel and play great.
A thought comes to mind. Stienway now owns the rights to Conn and King. I wonder if they would consider reissueing some of the old horns like Selmer does with the Reference 54's? I know a lot of cats that would buy a brand new Naked Lady or Super 20 if it was made with old time quality and attention to detail.
