Anyone know what kind of soprano mouthpiece Kim Waters uses? I've really been digging his sound lately.

Yeah I have a feeling you're right Tom. I was just curious because I'd bet he plays some kind of hard rubber piece.

Kim plays a Vandoren V5 mouthpiece with S35 tip-opening. And I think he's still using that Eddie Daniels Rovner lig. Great setup but the opening of that mpc is too big for me.

.071 or 182, depending on whether you are counting in inches or centimeters.

It takes some getting used to, but it's worth the effort. One word of caution, don't expect to use the same reed strength with this mouthpiece.
One can play a #3 reed on it, but it's a whole lot easier with a 2 1/2.

I just realized something: If Kim Waters was named King, and someone presented him something when he visited Boston (pronounced: Bahsten) it would sound just like someone swearing at my favorite female mod!

That's a LA Sax alto in white paint. I heard that it's actually the same type of paint used on cars...but with a clear coat of lacquer over it.

Just saw KW last night with Jeff Kashiwa and Steve Cole "the sax pack". He's not playing the white sax these days. Couldn't tell from 20 feet away except to say that it's got a LOT of engraving. May have been a Ref 54...

He played Alto and Sop last night, and if he's got any limitations, I didn't hear them. Huge, beautiful sound and even the Mrs. was wowed. Kashiwa and Cole blew their a**es off too... great show! First set was Marc Antoine, Paul Brown, and Kenny Rankin... I never could get enough of Kenny Rankin's sound.

Hello All. I just started playing (or I should say practicing) the Alto Sax and recently purchased my own personal instrument. What are the differences between the mouthpieces? Mine came with a 4C. I am interested in playing jazz so I try and practice twice a day and go to music lessons once a week. I love all the new and old jazz musicians as they are incredible no matter what style they play.

Thanks.

Michael
