Some years ago I watched this wonderful solo on TV, and enjoyed it a lot, now finally it´s available on youtube. For those interested about the gear, he is playing a King soprano. Enjoy it!
Oh, I almost forgot the bonus: Paul Motian & Charlie Haden.

Well, I just don't think Jarrett looks or sounds comfortable with that soprano. He sounds like he's trying too hard. I like his piano work with De Johnette and Gary Peacock though.

I do like his afro though.

I saw Keith play soprano live a couple of times with the great quartet with Haden, Motian and Dewey Redman and sometimes with G Franco percussion. Keith had such a snakey sound it was completely his own, I loved it. The unison playing with Dewey on those intricate heads was just spectacular. Of course it was his compositions. He had more personality and character to his playing than many skilled pro's.

I'm sorry...but I think that Keith just killed the soprano and destroyed it beyond recognition.
Even Steve Lacy can't bear to see/hear this, I'm sure.
Keith should just stick to his piano.

I don't understand why people can heap stupid criticisms on Kenny G and praise others when their soprano playing can't even be called 'melodic' in the simplest form of the word.

Because real music is something much bigger than "melodic", I don´t have any problem with Kenny G or Liberace, (but I simply don´t listen that kind of music) I think both are very close each other on musical taste and also believe there is no point to compare that kind of musician to Keith Jarret or Steve Lacy.

Yup. I totally agree with you. The avant garde is not for everyone.

I love it- it's serious and committed.
I've heard Jarrett before on soprano and loved it each time. It wasn't always this raw, though.

Consider what our world (the USA) was like in 1972.
We were in the streets and Kissinger was decimating a good portion of the earth.

Art should reflect its time, IMO.

Thanks for posting the clip.

I saw the talent, but I didn't care for it. I like smooth jazz (no, I don't like Kenny G) and jazz balleds. Slow stuff like that. Nice and smooth. That's what I think of when I see a soprano. Kenny Jarrett just did the most raspy song I ever heard on sop. I just didn't care for it.
