Hi guys,

I do appreciate all SOTWers' attentions and supports on our early stage Custom series mouthpieces, http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?147957-Kanee-Hard-Rubber-Mouthpieces-Pass-Around. After one year's hard working, and thousands times of adjustment in 0.001 inches, we upgraded and simplified our full product line based on your kind reviews posted, now we have some new models for launching. They are vintage alto New York, and tenor Florida.

The new pass around rules are as the same as we did in the last year, and I already had 5 packs for US first, each pack covers two mouthpieces, Kanee alto NY #8, and tenor Florida #7. Thanks very much for Steve's kind review on Kanee alto NY http://www.neffmusic.com/blog/2011/08/kanee-vintage-new-york-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece/, the tenor Florida review is coming soon...

Everybody is so welcome to participate, the previous SOTWers who posted reviews on Kanee custom mouthpieces are prior to receive. Please reply this tread, and email me your contact at [email protected], the packs of surprise will be at yours within 10 days since now.

Thanks very much
Kane Lee

Why those sizes? It would seem that the alto #8 is much larger than the popular classic Meyer facing (5/6) and that the tenor #7 is on the small side (vs 7*/8).

I'd be interested in trying the pieces. The alto is the size I currently play, and tenor is pretty close.....

I am currently playing Kanee mouthpieces. I have the Custom series in O6, V6 and V7. The O6 and V6 measure .094 using my "crude" caliper/straight edge method. The V7 is measures .104 All mouthpieces suffer from a slightly higher table "bump" towards the neck opening. This is the same as a lot of other mass produced mouthpieces I have tried, especially the Otto Links. The great news for me is these have a larger chamber volume than most other pieces I have tried and play wonderful on my Super 20. I will also agree with a couple of other people that the neck opening edge is very sharp. I have softened this edge on all my Kanee pieces using 1000 grit sandpaper. Simple, easy fix and not something to be overly concerned with. So far my favorite is the V7. Gives that full bodied sound without the tubby lows or choked off highs of say a new Link TE. Now the most important part.... after 5 minutes of playing on the V7 using a Java Red #3 my wife came back to my practice room and told me that whatever I did to stick with it as she really liked it. She can tell when I make changes in mouthpieces and or reeds. She advised this was the best so far. Since returning to playing after a very extended break ( 30 years ) I have been searching for "my sound" and I think the search is over. I tried several different reed brand/strength I have on hand and the Java Red #3 sound great on this piece.

Sorry for the rambling .... these are just my thoughts. If you want a more professional assessment on the Kanee then see Steve's website listed above.

I received the package today, and tried the tenor piece this evening. Will play it for a few days, but there were no instructions on where to send them next. Should I send them back to Steve Neff, or will someone email me the address of the next reviewer?

Will post my impressions in a few days.

Got the newest Kanee mpc passaround a few days ago. Came in nice jeweler type wooden boxes, no lig. Exterior of both are matte finished. They feel and look like they might be delrin, not sure. First up was the tenor. It is rather close with a short facing, about .100" tip opening. I tried this out on 2 modern Tiawanese tenors and a 1947 Aristocrat. Surprise to me, on the first passaround I was impressed with the tone/response and intonation, not so much this time. Sampled different reeds and ligs on all 3 horns and found the scale to not be as even and the tone lacking in color. To be fair I play a HR Link worked on by Phil E and opened to .120". I would say that it might be a nice choice for those that like "Bright" and almost too easy to blow pieces. The alto is a close look to my early 70's Meyer 8L but done in matte. Again not as full sounding as the Meyer. Trialed on my 1924 Buescher alto, sorry I don't have any modern altos to test it on. These seem to be easy for reed selection and lig use. Just not my thing as I like a fuller ( here come the adjectives) more colorful sound with not so much brightness. Both of these were, espeacially the alto, almost shrill to me. For my concept of sound the early Kanee mpc passaround had more hits. Won't fault the production execution just don't care for the thin sounds of these.

I received my Kanee "care package" yesterday. I spent the evening playing the tenor. I have no alto so I will simply pass that piece on to the next person. The new Florida model has a smaller chamber with a more higher overall baffle that is almost a straight drop from the tip to the start of the chamber. They appear to have addressed the cork cutter sharp edge at the neck opening so that is a good thing. The tip measured a .099 for my crude tools so I will concede it is supposed to be a .100 opening. The table still suffers from the typical Otto Link "bump" at the end towards the neck opening. This is common on various brands of factory pieces I have looked at. You would think someone could correct this aspect in the machining process. The window opening is shorter than the Custom series. The piece was very responsive with all the reeds I used. I used a Rovner ligature so not to scratch up the matte finish and a combination of RJS 3S, Java Red 3, Java Green 3 and my Legere 2.75 Signature. The sound is indeed brighter than my Kanee O7 or even the V7. It sounds very similar to a stock Otto Link NVS 6* I have only slightly brighter. I did not experience extra intonation issues on either the Super 20 or the Selmer T100. The Selmer was very even, the Super 20 takes a little more work but nothing that is outside what I normally experience on it. Overall, I still like my Kanee O7 and V7 better. I like a more mellow piece so that would explain my preferences.

More comparison pictures. A further note is that these Kanee pieces are smaller in their outside dimensions than most current Otto Link mouthpieces. I like the slimmer beak dimensions on the Kanee products I have played.
