I'd never heard of this guy until a few minutes ago. Absolutely amazing especial the fact that he circular breathes for over 6 minutes!

Let me pile on with just how much I get off on this guy. He reminds me a bit of early Adrian Belew but he does all his stuff solo and without loops or overdubbing. Awesome. Check out the other videos from the same interview. There's one with him explaining and demonstrating how he makes and combines the different sounds and effects to perform his tune " Judges ".It's moved my appreciation of him to a whole new level. Reminds me how I really liked R.R.Kirk but then when I got to see him live ( in Montreal )and was able to see what he did to make his incredible music, I was able to enjoy it even more.

I think he plays a Conn if I'm not mistaken. I had my eye on a bass several months back that he ended up buying. I think it was a Conn, and he was buying it as a backup. He's a great player, very creative. I love listening to him.

Off-kilter: you saw R.R.Kirk live!?!? I would have love to see him live, he's one of my favs!!!

Judges is what first got me hooked on the guy, but I think "The Righteous Wrath of an Honorable Man" is one of the most beautiful pieces I have EVER heard. Incredible talent in this guy, I'd love to see him live!

There's another video there where he breaks down what he's doing in "Judges". Very creative. I've experimented with contact pickups on my sax before, trying to create a pickup system to use effect pedals sometimes, but decided against it because it picked up too much key noise. I never really considered trying to incorporate the key noise into what I'm doing. And the "dog collar mic" is creative as well.

This music (some would hesitate to call it that) obviously isn't everyone's cup of tea (esp from reading the other thread on Coin which Marton posted a link to). Regardless of your taste, it would seem to me that one could still recognize the creativity that this guy displays. I love hearing guys trying to stretch the limits, and really trying to utilize an instrument to it's full potential...going beyond the conventional uses and finding new ways to use the horn. There's a world of sounds that this instrument can make!!!

Soooo... I got to hear Colin Stetson play live in Ottawa. Unfreakin' believable. When you hear him on his albums, even though there are no overdubs or the like ,it is much more refined. All the microphones have been balanced and adjusted on the recording. It gives it an almost delicate? sound. Live? It's raw, loud ,rough, unrelenting and eerily beautiful. Like listening to a dinosaur sing.I was surprised to find he gets the same big sound from his alto so the secret is not just in getting the biggest sax you can find. He played a few tunes from his upcoming album and I can't wait for it to be released. As he masters the different sound techniques it frees him up more and more to concentrate on the music.

It would be fun to hear him live but these recordings are not my cup of tea. He speaks so clearly and sincerely and I like his talking a lot. Circular breathing changes the acoustics of playing because the lungs and other air chambers are not used during sound making, only the mouth cavity. I've done it for years but do not find much use for it. Yes, I heard Roland Kirk live and was astounded by his playing and his swinging, with a lot of his hardware held on with masking tape. At the bar between sets, he seemed unapproachable.

These old Conns and Bueschers, as well, could benefit from adding a bis key.
