I was curious if anyone had an idea of how often Hodges used subtone, and whether he made use of it in the horn's middle and upper registers. His tone is what I imagine an alto should sound like, and I've transcribed two of his solos (I Got It Bad and Funky Blues) but am not quite getting that sound. I don't mean his inflections and use of vibrato, but just the raw tone. Pete's site mentions Hodges in the subtone page, but I'm wondering how liberally he's using it, and if that's a significant contribution to his tone throughout the range. I think he uses it more often than not in the lower register (he doesn't have that big honking sound at the bottom end but something much more velvety) but I'm less sure about the middle and upper registers
