the summer of 1980... Mel Lewis Orchestra.

Joe Lovano playing a 10* brass Otto Link and a Balanced Action... and killing it...

... and later in 1985 playing the first boxwood Francois Louis... sounds different. I'm not saying I like one or the other -- but they are different sounds. ... and the later is how I think of Joe Sounding...

Thanks for sharing. IMO, he sounded way better on the Link. There's a clarity and "ring" in his sound he doesn't seem to get now on his FL.

Hmmm? I can't definitively say I prefer one over the other... The sound he gets and what he's playing is so inspiring (on the 1985 video) gives me goosebumps... damn he's playing so much tenor saxophone... whew!!!

BUT - it is pretty cool to hear him tearing it up in a big band concert, playing a metal Link super tone master, on a balanced!

1985, hands down for me. I like the focused tone and amazing articulation he's getting from that FL.
His playing and tone both sound better to me (as far as what I like to hear) and he looks a 100 times cooler in 1985 than he did in 1980!

All killer...it is so hard to say any of them are better. I know what you mean, Adam...the 1985 clip is kind of the "archetypical" Lovano...

Thanks for posting these!
