I spent the day in the studio working and listening to Joe Farrell in many contexts.
It's been decades since I really listened to him on tenor, soprano and flute.
He died before he was 50 and his playing is just outrageous.
His credits are stunning ( Herbie Hancock, Return to Forever, The Band, Hall & Oates, Jeff Lorber, Average White Band, Billy Cobham, Elvin Jones, Andrew Hill, Mingus, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, wow!!)

Just a shout in the night for Joe Farrell's playing!

Joe,

Have you checked out the album with Joe Farrell and Art Pepper? It was actually Art's last recording. Joe is awesome. I just wished that he'd played the flute or soprano on that one.

Truly one of the master players. I love that Puttin' It Together trio w/ Elvin and Jimmy Garrison. The fact that Elvin hired him say's a lot. The Return to Forever stuff is spectacular and all his great solo lps. Nobody in jazz played the flute better.
I saw him once with the first touring edition of the Mingus Dynasty. I wish I could have seen him many more times.

Thanks for putting this reminder up. Yeah, he was remarkable. I heard him live - of all places in Japan. I was living/working there in the 60s and the Thad/Mel band played there and I was lucky to hear them. Gad what a sax section!!! Geeez Marie! I'm not positive, but on that tour I believe they had Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels and Pepper Adams.

He was one of the very few Sax/flute doublers who didn't sound like a saxophonist when he played flute. He seemed to have a separate vocabulary for flute. He certainly had excellent flute technique.

I'm just going to have to come in here and say... YES!!!! There was a recent release of "The Capitol Vaults" which, in this case, includes all of the Elvin Jones Blue Note recordings. Incredible stuff.

One of my very first exposures to Joe was his stuff on Musicmagic and RTF Live. I was just blown away by his amazing sound and elliiptic phrasing.

My second favorite Andrew Hill record is "Dance with Death" beautiful record. He was an original.

I always loved his sax playing and his flute chops were insane! I had one LP I played for months. I must find it again. Thanks Joe! (I thought about it, and I mean both Joe's...).

+1 for Puttin' It Together. Also love the Elvin album "Polycurrents" from the same time .... Farrell, Pepper Adams, and George Coleman all together with Elvin and Jimmy Garrison.

A friend turned me onto Farrell's playing as a sideman on the Pat Martino record "Strings!" .... really smoking. Anyone heard that album?

Yeah, that cut of Minority blew me away and was the side that turned me on to Joe Farrell. This is going back a ways.
