I am considering buying this mpc and I would like to hear other players takes on it.(preferably on alto sax) and is this piece suitable for big band because that is the field I would love to start playing on. I haven't played on a jazz mouthpiece before but I can adapt quickly. Also is this piece comfortable to play overall. I know opinions can be different but I would still like to get input on this piece.

Just a word of caution - at least on the tenor, this mouthpiece has a tendency to be very sharp. Buy it from Jody and you will have the option of exchanging it if it is too sharp for your particular sax.

I owned one when I was playing alto as my main horn but I sold it because I found the sound to be rather bland. Maybe it was just that particular one and I was unlucky, but I definitely wasn't well impressed with it.

It's only Sharp compared to Large Chambered mouthpieces.

My link I had to push almost all the way to the end of the cork. Where as in comparison the Jody Hr* (which I now use exclusively) sits on the other end.

But it plays in tune that way.

I think overall it's a good little mouthpiece and will be easy to play. It's not my particular cup of tea, as I like the darker sound I get from Soloists on alto, but I think it would be perfectly serviceable for big band and as your first "jazz" mouthpiece. If you really want to start with the "go to" jazz mp for alto, you may also want to consider a Meyer 5 or 6 that's been worked on by someone (like Phil-Tone). Price would be reasonably comparable to the JJ, I think.

I went to this sound comparison site and I didn't really like the sound of the Meyer. I like the tone of the jody jazz and also surprisingly I like the sound of the E. Rousseau jdx mpc it sounded completely different but I liked it. But their is also the problem of me not having the same tone as the person playing those on the soundfiles.

I play a Rousseau JDX on bari and like it a ton. Haven't tried it on alto, but I've heard good reports. WWBW.com (where you can get one) has a pretty generous trial/return policy, so perhaps you can get one and compare it to the JJ hr* (JodyJazz allows trials as well).

I might just do that. The only bad thing would be me getting stuck between the two. But ill probably end up buying both of them in the future. Especially since the Rousseau is very inexpensive.

If i had to choose one genre of music to be played with the jodyjazz HR it would be big band!,i had a piece for alto and tenor, and the alto piece was superb, it would definitely have been good/excellent for 2nd chair, and would have fared well as a soloist mouthpiece too.
The sound to me projected very well but had a nice core sound to it, the tenor piece i had sounded too mellow for me but ok.

Compared to the vintage NY Meyer I'd like to buy, I MUCH prefer the Meyer. But at 10% the cost of the Meyer, I like my JJ HR* just fine! :) Go give one or two of them a try...you'll never really know if it's for you until you give it a whirl. It's definitely worth your time to get some time with one though.

Good luck on the hunt.

What did u not like about it? Tone, comfort anything in particular?
Hi

Comfort wise it was fine.
The Tenor piece is a nice free blow, has a warm-ish sound with a bit of punch when you push it ...very easy top end.
(for me and my horn !~) the Alto piece had none of that. You have to remember what works for/sounds good to me ...may be no good at all for the guy next door.
Try lots and buy the one that makes you want to sing !

P.S. also no fan of the JDX :bluewink: Some fine info here ---> http://www.neffmusic.com/blog/tenor-mouthpiece-reviews/alto-mouthpiece-reviews/
